DOES WeArt International Support Crime?
In our support of graffiti and other street arts, we are often confronted with the question "why does WeArt International support vandalism and destruction of property".
The answer is very simple. We don't. WeArt International does not support crime. We support art, and the productive messages it contains. To the contrary of supporting any activity that hurts people or creates victims, we support brotherhood and productive cooperation.
More revealing however, is the assumption behind the question. Many people misunderstand that the point of graffiti is not crime; the point is expression and art. Graffiti is not a crime.... vandalism and destruction of property are crimes.
Walking is not a crime, yet one can trespass. Driving is not a crime, yet one can drive drunk. Graffiti is not a crime, yet one can vandalize property. Whether or not the legal activity becomes a crime is in the hands and intent of the individual, and is not inherent in the activity itself.
That said, it is a moral crime that in this abundant world we still create and allow war, poverty, starvation, violence, homelessness, and many other crimes against innocent or helpless people. In areas where these moral crimes exist, all forms of art, including graffiti, will proliferate as the affected people express their human soul through these soulless activities and conditions. The conditions create the need for the expression in art, and many times the only available result is that the art is created where it will be seen and shared, often violation of law.
We do not support the violation of law. We also do not support the violation of human rights, or ignorance of human needs. We DO support art and self expression, and we DO support the absence of isolation, desolation, and invisibility that we can all end through actions of inspired human hearts.
Create a better world, and desecration will quickly give way to the true beauty of humanity.
